put on the armor of light

I dearly love this typeface, but the kerning is NOT my favorite. I did my best to adjust it, but I'm not sure how well I ended up doing. Oh well! The content is ultimately what's important, and in this case I am very fond indeed of that content :) I love the image of "armor of light". It makes me want to draw it but I'm not sure I could do justice to the idea.

misc.

I haven't put up a lot of sketching since I've been doing so much design stuff, so here's some random things from my sketchbook!

Trying to figure out charcoal

This is from way back when I was thinking of doing a Christmas piece.

hidden gems

I'm currently reading the entire Old Testament during the school year for seminary, which is a scripture study class my church has before school every day. It's honestly one of the best parts of my entire day and I've really enjoyed going more in-depth into the Old Testament and having help understanding the more difficult parts. It makes a huge difference in helping me understand all the other scriptures and has really helped me understand more about the common ground we share with the Jewish faith and with their culture. I have to say that Deuteronomy and Leviticus weren't exactly light reading, but even in the midst of all of those difficult passages I discovered so many of these great hidden gems and I would file them away for ponderizing later (hence today's post!) :) Don't be scared of diving right into the more difficult books of scripture. "There's gold in them thar hills" if you're willing to patiently put in the time and dig for it!

do not go gentle into that good night

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on that sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
-Dylan Thomas

I've been thinking about this poem a lot recently. Life isn't going to get easier and the world is going to be a more challenging place in many ways. "This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come." And that's not just true for the world at large, but for each of our individual lives. But we can't just give up and quit because we know the days ahead will be dark.

The thing is . . . day always follows night, and light always conquers darkness. The new beginning that comes after the end will be more glorious still than the first.

So do not go gentle. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

strength through service

Our church has a group of youth who help plan events for all the youth in our area. This year we're planning for a service activity and we chose "strength through service" as our theme, based on this scripture :) I'm already excited about it! Well, technically it's based on the first verse, but I really liked both so I put them both in the design.

you never know . . . (watch the video!)

I am tired and a little burned out this week. (I'm not giving up though. As I always like to say, "I don't do crushed.") Yikes. But this is one of my favorite scriptures, so that's good!

I also wanted to share this video, which is really inspiring and helpful if you're feeling like you're not getting anything done. You might not be getting the things you thought you needed to do done, but you can be getting done the things that God needs to have done (which is way more important!)
