week five

Two posts in one day! What?
Guess who figured out how to make textures in Inkscape . . . :)

a foray into digital painting

I got a drawing tablet for Christmas (yay!) but haven't had much chance to learn to use it until now. The first real piece I tried with it was a study which came out kind of awful, so I'm not putting it on here, but I did do this thing to play around with blending and painting and such. It's quite a stiff learning curve, but if I'm able to put in the time I think I can figure it out. This is a humble beginning for sure, but I did teach myself the program I'm using (Krita) a bit better which will definitely help me with future pieces. Have a fantastic week, friends!

psalm 24:3-4

Hello friends!
I tried to do a bit more with the actual typography this week. It always takes longer, but when I have the time I like to work on the design to make important words stand out. This was fun to do-I hope you enjoy it, :) Note: If you're looking at this post after having seen the original and wondering if I changed it-I did! After I exported the first version, I realized that it looked nice, but when I put it on my phone, the little row of icons at the bottom covered up a big part of the text and I couldn't crop it to my liking. Hence the new-and-improved version, which can be set as a phone background while still remaining fully legible (kind of defeats the purpose if you can't actually read the scripture, haha.)

I have an assignment from my design class to share that I might post later this week or next week (probably next week, because finals are this week and I'm not going to have much time for blogging until they're over. Yikes.) Also, I need to get back to posting some actual sketches-so once finals are over, I plan on uploading some of those for you guys as well.

Have a lovely week, everyone!

segullah

Hey lovely friends! I've got another ponderizing scripture background for you this week-I'm slowly learning how to size things the way I want in Inkscape and this should hopefully scale up or down for a variety of different phone screen dimensions.

I love this scripture-I learned that the Hebrew word translated as "peculiar" is "segullah", which means "special possession or property". I think that helps a lot in understanding the verse, although the way the world sees it we definitely could be called peculiar in the modern sense too. But that's okay too :)

Also-I was given the opportunity for my design of this scripture to be used for a handout to the girls at my church. Which means I'm sort of in print! Yay!

I know it's kind of silly to take a picture of a picture I already have on this blog. . . is this what the kids call "meta"? I'm not cool enough to tell. But I was glad I could share something that's important to me with my little design. Hopefully it can be a nice way for other people to remember it too.

I hope you all have wonderful weeks, readers! :)

#ponderizingchallenge2016?

Yep, two weeks in a row talking about this. . . the reason is that I'm thinking about making one of these every week to use as a background for my phone to go along with my "ponderizing"! It always makes it easier to memorize and consistently ponder the scripture if it's there for me to read every time I open my phone. And for me it's a lot more difficult to ignore if it's in a cute font and pretty colors! :) I don't know if I'll be able to do it every single week, but I'm going to try to get as many weeks as I can and see how it goes. This week I didn't end up doing any of the scriptures I was thinking about last week, but I came across this one and felt like it would be a good choice. This is one of my favorites:) If you have a suggestion for next week, let me know in the comments! And if you're ponderizing, what scripture are you studying? See you next week, lovely readers!

2016

Hey everyone! It's been a while since I posted, because I've been visiting family out of state. It was basically the best vacation ever. . . I love my family :D

Today I'm excited about 2016. I love the start of the new year-it's a great time to recommit myself to becoming better and changing! One of the things that I love about the new year is that my church's youth program picks a scripture that will be the theme for the things we do throughout the year. To celebrate, I made a design of the scripture in Inkscape. I'm learning how to use Inkscape on my own time, and I figured a good way to practice various features would be creating images for quotes and scriptures. Something we've been challenged to do is "ponderize" (ponder + memorize) a scripture each week, so I'm tentatively going to try making a picture of my weekly scripture. (Check out the talk about ponderizing HERE.) I like to set the scripture as my phone background throughout the week, so doing it in Inkscape will be useful for that as well as being good practice. And I'm starting with the theme scripture this week! I hope you all have a lovely week and if you want to join me and choose a scripture you want to learn better for a bit of "ponderizing" . . . the more the merrier! Welcome aboard! No pressure, of course, but I will say it's a really good habit that has greatly blessed my life-it's definitely worth a try. Meanwhile, I'm trying to decide on my next scripture. . . Probably either Psalms 24:3-4, Isaiah 53:3-5, or 1 Samuel 16:7. Gotta get ahead on my scripture mastery :) If you have a suggestion, let me know in the comments!
